Federal holiday

Columbus Day

Columbus Day, the second Monday of October, is observed by some states as Indigenous Peoples' Day.

History

Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1937 and was moved to the second Monday of October by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968. Many states and school districts now observe Indigenous Peoples' Day on the same date; PrintCalendars labels it according to federal designation but lists both names where applicable.

On academic calendars

K-12 districts vary — some treat Columbus Day as a single-day holiday and others extend it into a 'Fall Break' that pairs the Monday with the surrounding days.

Dates by year

Below is the full schedule for Columbus Day from 2020 through 2035. The "observed" date matches the actual date in most years; it differs only when the statutory date lands on a Saturday or Sunday, in which case federal offices observe the holiday on the adjacent weekday per OPM rules.
