Federal holiday

Juneteenth National Independence Day

Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

History

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom. It was made a federal holiday on June 17, 2021 and is the newest federal holiday. PrintCalendars includes Juneteenth on all academic and printable calendars from 2021 onward.

On academic calendars

Because Juneteenth falls in mid-June, most academic calendars list it as an observance only — the school year is typically already complete. Summer programs and year-round schools, however, do close.

Dates by year

Below is the full schedule for Juneteenth National Independence Day from 2020 through 2035. The "observed" date matches the actual date in most years; it differs only when the statutory date lands on a Saturday or Sunday, in which case federal offices observe the holiday on the adjacent weekday per OPM rules.
